Kate Kalnins's Bio

Kate is a Chicago area transplant, and has been in Seattle since the year of 2000. She comes to Emerson most recently from the awesome Radar Hair & Records, and has been cutting hair and transformationalizing men and women or all sorts and styles since sometime in 2001; her own hair being her first victim, to much success, fortunately!

She is a barber, and hence, specializes in men’s cuts and styles, anything ranging from high end edgy styles, to a skin fade if that is what is in order. She also did a month of advanced training with a UK based company called Toni & Guy, the leaders and originators of the whole “Rock Star Hair Style”, in England in the 70′s. She loves most doing edgy disconnected styles, layers, layers, more layers, also short styles, anything with texture, lots of dry cutting, etc.

One of her favorite tasks is helping people manage ANY difficult hair texture. Too thick, too thin/fine, come in and see what can be done!! In her spare time, Kate can most easily be found wandering about the Hill, at the Mercury, hanging out with her pet rats, and often enough has a yo-yo in hand. She was Advanced Division champion of the Pacific Northwest Regionals a few years back. Just ask and she may show you a trick or two! The high lofty ceilings at Emerson will come in handy for Shooting the Moon, incidentally! No more accidental hitting of low hanging beams…. :D

Favorite Movies
Anything Wes Anderson, Christopher Guest or featuring Judy Garland. Buffalo '66. My newest favorite is The Future, by Miranda July.
Favorite Music
The best way I can describe this is anything dark, sad or pretty; ideally music that combines all 3 of these!!! Especially Patrick Wolf, the Cure, Judy Garland, most cheesy older music like Neil Diamond, Tom Jones, Bread, Engelbert, Barry Manilow, Anne Murray, etc...(Have you ever listened to KIXI AM 880!??? Best station ever!!) Also most industrial music.. and of course my likely favorite band of all time, Ours, who I have seen something like 40+ times since 2000!
Favorite Restaurant
Most times that I eat out at all, it's either at Than Brothers or India Express right next door to the Than Bros. on Broadway, because the food is great and the owners/family of owners are all extremely nice.. Being from Chicago I also LOVE PIZZA, so Hot Mama's is grand, or Piecora's. If I can ever manage to leave the Hill, Red Mill is awesome too!
Where you can find me on Friday night
Either in, watching movies, or at the Mercury, generally.
What I love most about being a stylist
I love helping people. I love helping them finally LIKE their hair for once ever, because certainly no one was ever able to do that for me before! I was always the kid with the "triangle of puffy hair", and I HATED it!! I love helping people find a style that fits them, especially people that had no idea they even Had a style. Mostly I just want to make each client "Handsome", whatever that means for them, individually!
Favorite hairstyle
Generally anything involving layers and texture. It makes almost everyone's hair more work-able.
Favorite hair product
Mostly I use the Evo line. They have amazing products and are still far too unknown, due to being so new on the market.
Favorite coffee house
Bauhaus!!! Best Salted Caramel Mocha ever. Hands down. It's like a judochop to the face, of caffeine and chocolately/caramelly goodness!!
