Meet Our New Team Member…aka Air Purifier: “Lil’ Fauci”

In our daily work to fight Covid19 in the salon we have obtained a medical grade air filtration system from MEDIFYAIR.com . The MA -112 V 2.0 filters up to 5000 sq ft and is able to filter out the micron level of the virus and other harmful air pollutants. Our space is 1010 sq.ft and are happy that every 15 min— 1225 sq ft of air is purified. This means if every independent service provider inside the Emerson Salon location takes 15 min to disinfect between clients that the entire salon of air will be cleaned by the time the next client arrives.

We decided since this NEW TEAM MEMBER is so integral to what we do to stay safe, wear masks and disinfect all tools and high touch points based on CDC guidance and Dr Fauci’s expertise—- that it only seemed right to honor Dr. Fauci’s knowledge and service with a special NAME for our new machine! NOTE: We have powerful HVAC systems in our location but this just adds a little more peace of mind for providers and clients alike.

Welcome “Lil’ Fauci” to the team of pros that work inside our location!

We are taking hair services BY APPOINTMENT ONLY– book with your selected provider through the STYLISTS Button on the emersonsalon.com home page!

Celebrate US!

Has it REALLY been 5 years since Lancer and D’Arcy took over ownership of Emerson Salon? WOW!

Time sure flies when you’re having fun with hair! This unique location inside an old 1920’s auto row building on Capitol Hill in Seattle, WA continues to host experienced small business hair pros who serve quality hair services to their happy hair clients. Our location is centrally located and serves a cozy yet quirky steampunk vibe with old bureau stations and fun purple accents. All of the service providers inside this location are empowered to run their business as they see fit- schedule, online booking, pricing and more!

Join us in celebrating OUR story:

In 2008, Alex Garcia and Matt Buchan established Emerson Salon at 909 E. Pike St. in Seattle, WA. They made a huge impact as they pushed the concept that social media, an expert blog and stylist profiles as imperative to showcase a hair salon in this modern age. From 2008-2012 Lancer and D’Arcy worked as commission based employees and established clientele in the location as employees.

In 2012, the business model was switched by previous owners to renting chairs to independent contractors. Within a small period of time, D’Arcy and Lancer guided colleagues through the process of becoming self employed cosmetologists. Additionally, they wanted to learn the right way to run a small business and attended a business development course through Washington Ventures non-profit organization. They continued advanced training through Peer Loan Group, marketing and financial management courses as well in their pursuit of legal and ethical business practices.  2012 until present, D’Arcy and Lancer have maintained self-employment as independently run booth rent cosmetologists who are highly regarded by the community and clients alike.

In 2014, co-owners Lancer Forney MacMahon and D’Arcy Harrison took over the Emerson Salon location. With legal counsel assistance, they negotiated a new commercial lease with 4-N Associates as well as an extensive transfer agreement with previous owners of the DBA name, goodwill  and assets. B.Please LLC applied for, presented and was granted a “Business Builder” federally backed loan through Washington Ventures and the Small Business Administration. A  B.Please LLC partnership utilizes “Doing Business As” of Emerson Salon.

2014 and beyond: Emerson Salon co-owners (Lancer Forney MacMahon and D’Arcy Harrison) have a combined experience of over 35 years in the cosmetology industry. They are also female and/or LGBTQ and work daily to provide a safe space for everyone in the historically LGTBQ+ friendly Capitol Hill Area.  They also work onsite as cosmetologists themselves and ensure the business is presented professionally on a daily basis via a maintained salon space and online presence (website, connections social media, stylist booking, & blog .)

In Winter 2019, Emerson Salon’s D’Arcy Harrison assisted in killing 6-7 bills in the WA State Legislature aimed at eliminating booth rental and dramatically curtailing small business. Through her advocacy, testimony, marketing efforts and bill analysis she aided support of 1000’s of cosmetologists in WA State to continue to do business with hours & schedule flexibility while paying all licenses and appropriate taxes.

——– and that leads us to now ……September 2019 where Emerson Salon is now a FINALIST for an Association of Washington Business Excellence Award. The ceremony will be held at Benaroya Hall Nov 20. WISH US LUCK! We would love to share the fancy glass award with our community who has supported our success and longevity!! Thank You for all YOUR LOVE!

Color Care At Home

Just because a color may be “permanent”, hair color doesn’t last forever. ALL hair color, whether natural, temporary, demi-permanent, semi-permanent, or permanent, will dull and fade over time. Protect your color investment by slowing the fading process by following these tips!

1) Wash less often, and consider using dry shampoos between washes.

2) When you DO shampoo, wash and rinse your hair with cooler water (easy to do in the summer for sure!) This helps keep your color from running.

3) Use shampoos and conditioners that are formulated to maintain color. UVA and UVB protective shampoos and conditioners keep your color looking fresh by protecting from the sun’s harmful rays that dull color over time, and using pigmented shampoos and conditioners, such as the Love Kevin Murphy Colouring.Angels at home between salon appointments to deposit color temporarily.

4) Watch the heat styling. Using hot tools on high-heat settings will fade a color quicker than anything. Use a thermal protectant spray before applying heat from your blow dryer or hot irons, because thermal protectants create a barrier between your hair and the heat. Using a lower heat setting is much safer in the long run and also helps prevent moisture loss that is inevitable from using hot tools on your hair.

The Kevin Murphy Experience

THE KEVIN MURPHY EXPERIENCE

From time to time, we have an opportunity to have educators from our favorite brands give us some inspiring styling tutorials and advice. This week, Sara (an educator for Kevin Murphy International kevinmurphy.com.au) came in from Austin, TX to help us strengthen our finishing skills with Kevin Murphy products. The Kevin Murphy range is based on skincare and has high performance results.

Our model,Kenna, has longer, fine slightly wavy hair. D’Arcy prepped her by detoxing her hair twice with Maxi.Wash (an alpha hydroxy  detox shampoo- not a clarifier) and followed it with Angel.Wash and Angel.Masque.

After a quick towel dry ballerina bun, Sara applied Leave. In Repair. Then she used Body.Mass on all the roots to assist in plumping and lift at the base. To enhance movement to the hair, she added Motion.Lotion and dried on a high heat low speed setting and kept squeezing the hair until 85% dry

To finish, Sara sprayed Bedroom.Hair that helps with some hold as well as aiding in keeping the hair fluffy and full.

Sara then moved on to create a second look on Kenna. She used a 2.25″ clipless curling iron to create soft bend to large sections of hair. The key tip was not to wrap the hair completely but only in 1.5 rotations and continuing the rolling action (back and forth) for up  to 30 seconds. She then finished with quick shots of Doo.Over to help emphasize the softness of the look.

Our second model, Karen, has naturally wavy, frizzy hair. Sara prepped her with Smooth Again Wash and Rinse to help lay down the cuticle to eliminate frizz. Then she applied AntiGravity all over and then a tad of Motion Lotion on the ends. She then used small clips to prop up the roots towards the top and then used applied the Texture Net over the entire head. She then placed Karen under a Medium Heat hood dryer for 20 min. Voila! Controlled texture with no frizz.

See the result below!
